Commencement

Work shall commence as soon as practical after, but not before,
(a) the Builder has issued:
a written order

a written order
the relevant contract drawings, specifications and schedule of work
written approval of any details provided by the Contractor

(b) the structural framework has reached a stage to permit the work to proceed.

Installation

All installations in wet areas shall comply with the Drawings, Building Regulations and relevant Standard. Unless stated otherwise, the following shall apply:

Preparation

Before fixing cladding or flooring to the framing or substrate, check and, if necessary, rectify the alignment to ensure both levels and plumb. Refer to the Specification for Wall, Roof & Floor Framing.

Timber Flooring

Timber flooring shall be installed in accordance with AS 1684.

Particleboard Flooring

Particleboard flooring shall be installed with AS/NZS 1860.2.

Fixing to Frames

Cladding and flooring shall be nailed to timber framing and screwed to steel framing.

Accessories

All necessary accessories and trim shall be installed.

Hardboard Plank Cladding

Hardboard plank cladding shall be fixed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, including preformed joiners and preformed corners (Alternatively timber corner stops may be used.)

Compressed Fibre-Cement Cladding

Compressed fibre-cement cladding shall be fixed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Eaves and soffit linings shall consist of at least 4.5 mm sheet, with PVC extrusions forming the joints and fixed to each roof truss at 450 mm centres.

Timber Board Cladding

Timber board cladding shall be dipped or brushed with water repellent preservative that is compatible with a specified finished coating. Cut surfaces shall be treated with water repellent before fixing. When boards run vertically and, where practical for horizontal boards, single lengths shall be used. For stained or clear finishes, nails shall be driven flush. For painted surfaces, nails shall be punched below the surface and filled with putty or wood filler after prime painting.

Wet Areas

Installations in wet areas shall comply with AS 3740, which defines Category 1 areas as “over the shower or showers”. Other wet areas are defined as Category 2.
For cement render in wet areas, refer to the Specification for Ceiling & Wall Lining.
For water-resistant plasterboard sheets for wet-area lining, refer to the Specification for Ceiling and Wall Lining.
For ceramic tiling in wet areas, refer to the Specification for Floor and Wall Tiling.

Timber Shrinkage

Timber shrinks in cross section, although, due to the grain structure, it remains relatively stable in length. Cover strips should be provided at the edges of timber panelling to allow for shrinkage. The use of kiln-dried timbers will reduce shrinkage.

Gaps

Gaps that result from timber splitting should be repaired, filled with wood filler and sanded smooth before completion.

Nailing

Where architraves are required to be subsequently removed, the nails should be left proud. On completion they should be driven in and punched where appropriate.
