Landscaping

Scope

This section covers the specification and detailing of:
  • landscaping
  • tree or shrub planting

Building Regulations and Standards

Relevant Standards

  • AS 4419 Soils for landscaping and garden use
  • AS 3743 Potting mixes

Commencement

Work shall commence as soon as practical after, but not before,
(a) the Builder has issued:
  • a written order
  • the relevant contract drawings, specifications and schedule of work
  • written approval of any details provided by the Contractor
(b) all external works, apart from fencing, are complete.

Installation

Hay bale barriers

Star pickets shall be inserted at centres not exceeding 3000 mm, where there is the possibility of a build-up of water pressure behind a barrier.

Geotextile barriers

1200 mm long star pickets shall be inserted at centres not exceeding 3000 mm. The geotextile shall be embedded in a 200 x 200 mm trench on the upstream side. The geotextile shall protrude 500 mm above the soil surface.

Tree guards

Plywood shall be supported around the tree by 1200 mm long star pickets attached with wire through holes in plywood.

Soils

All rubbish shall be removed from the site. Soils shall be placed to a minimum depth of 300 mm and left uncompacted.

Plants

Plants shall be of the species and size specified in the schedule.
Plants shall be planted in holes of diameter equal to the green growth and equal in depth to the root system.

Garden Edging

Garden edging shall be securely positioned in locations shown on the drawings. All edging shall be checked for position before garden beds are planted.
Edges formed from rocks, pavers or similar materials shall be founded on mortar beds and jointed with mortar. Mortar shall be M3 (1:1:6) in accordance with AS 3700.

Drainage and Watering System

Drainage and watering pipes shall be positioned in locations so to maximise their effectiveness.
Drainage pipes shall drain at a minimum of 1 in 100 to an appropriate dispersion or stormwater system.
Where pipes change direction, suitable junctions and elbows shall be used rather than bending pipes.
Where pipes are buried their positions shall be noted and recorded for future reference.
Back-flow prevention devices should be provided for all underground installations to prevent back-flow occurring when pipes are damaged. The device shall comply with the relevant approval authority’s requirements.
Installation and wiring of electronic control devices shall be in accordance with the manufacturer instructions.
