- roller security shutters
- security grilles
Relevant Standards
- AS 5039 Security screen doors and security window grilles
- AS 5040 Installation of security screen doors and window grilles
Commencement
Work shall commence as soon as practical after, but not before,
(a) the Builder has issued:
- a written order
- the relevant contract drawings, specifications and schedule of work
- written approval of any details provided by the Contractor
(b) the walls adjacent to the window shutters have been constructed and the windows installed. Before manufacture commences, the Contractor shall:
- Take all relevant site measurements;
- Advise the Builder of all relevant site measurements in writing;
- Receive from the Builder approval to proceed with manufacture.
Installation
Window shutters shall be installed such that they provide the specified opening size, including head clearance and in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
Metal security grilles shall be installed in accordance with AS 4605. They shall fit around the window such that the maximum clearance is similar to the size grille being used. They shall not impede the opening of the window. They shall be fixed securely to the external wall from the inside.

- Specify the Required Clear Opening Width, the minimum permissible distance between the tracks. If the exact dimensions are not known at the time of specification, write “approx” after the dimension.
- Specify the required slat properties, such as slat dimensions, slat materials, fire resistance, bushfire resistance, acoustic performance and thermal properties.
- Specify the required track properties, including dimensions, substrate to which they will be fixed, method of fixing etc.
- Specify the required method of opening and closing each shutter (e.g. winders, openers, electric motors etc), together with any particular requirements for electrical installation, cable runs, switch positions etc.

Potential Problems & Solutions
[+]
Damage to Shutters
The performance of shutters should be monitored before completion. In particular, check that the shutters have not been damaged during installation or by other trades.
Eaves Clearance
Ensure that there is sufficient eaves space to accommodate the rollers. Ensure that the shutter, when in the raised position, does not obscure the window opening.
